The time is now 22nd century. Today's students are discovering that their teachers are seriously lacking when it comes to knowledge about the future. They have just one week to learn everything they need to lead their community out of danger. This becomes significant when Leonard, an old man living in the present day, has just invented something that could change humanity's existence overnight if it falls into wrong hands. When Leonard is attacked and left in a coma, the students race against time to save him and themselves in this science fiction adventure. The two and a half hour movie is produced by AR Rahman and directed by Raju Murugan. Do you remember how we said that Raju Murugan [director of Murugan Idam Thamizh] was picked for this project because he can bring together top notch technicians? Well, this much is obvious in the visuals. Each frame speaks of someone who knew his/her job very well. From the sets to the cinematography, every element works seamlessly to deliver an experience that makes you wish there were more movies like this in kollywood. Although the movie is mostly shot in a studio, it feels like the real deal. Stunts, visual effects and practical work are flawless. The movie wastes no time letting you know what it's about. The first line of the story is uttered in the opening scene itself. There's an old man leading his team to fight alien invaders; he meets with an accident; he has to be saved by future school students who go back in time to rescue him. How they make time travel possible? With AR Rahman's music, of course! Such unadulterated ridiculousness sets you up for a ride that doesn't disappoint even for a second. The movie's plot is loosely based on Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but unlike the latter this one doesn't bore you to death. It takes enough time to introduce you to the story, characters and plot devices before it starts throwing unrealistically fun stuff at you. From a song with faux monsters in it, to a giant robot battle, there's just so much in all its absurdity that you can't help but enjoy it! Since the film was made on a budget of just 2.5 crores [if you compare this with say Ra Ra or 7aum Arivu, it seems even lesser]. These filmmakers have done everything that they possibly could have with what little they had in their hands. This is one movie that is worth endorsing for commercial success. There is no denying the fact that PK stands out with its fantastic sense of aesthetics and pure heart. The film grossed 41 crore at Tamil Nadu box office. However, it failed to surpass the collections of 'Oru Kupras Kupalai Vaa' which collected 45 crore nett. The film got released on 7th May 2017 with almost all throughout the country. The release was delayed by 2 days due to some technical issues at some theatres, after which its release was extended to 15th May 2017.
